Nikki Ekström is a multimedia artist primarily using oil paint and sculpture to create work. Her work explores the natural and metaphysical world, as she aims to figure out her relationship to spirituality, nature, and the feminine body.

Her process is mostly intuitive, often driven by dreams, visuals while meditating, recurring symbols in nature, and dance. She believes there are forces not seen in nature that play a role in her everyday life, and finds comfort in translating these ideas into 2D and 3D forms.

Her paintings are created using a subtractive method, and images are carved out of what appears to her on the canvas and built up from there.

Her sculptures are built up over time, adding materials and layering until there is a form that takes shape. She uses light across mediums to give the work an ethereal presence, and believes projects are entities that can carry energy in them.

When painting figures, she will use herself as a reference, setting up mirrors and studying her own body as she dances or contorts to create playful compositions. She finds the study of the human body - especially the feminine body, to be healing, helping her connect back to herself and feel at home in her skin.

Through the creation of her work, she is unpacking her beliefs and evaluating her connection to them.
